West Scotland MSP Jamie Greene has raised awareness of an SSPCA scheme which certifies responsible puppy breeders and reassures buyers that their new dog has had a good start in life.

The Assured Puppy Breeder Scheme sets a minimum standard for puppy welfare and will help expose illegal and rogue breeders.

It comes amidst a massive increase in public demand for puppies over lockdown which, in many cases, has led to bad breeders taking advantage of the situation.

Across Ayrshire in 2020 more than150 puppies from low-welfare farms or dealers were rescued.

Jamie Greene said: “There are many unscrupulous puppy dealers operating across our local area and this scheme will help expose those who do not meet a high standard of welfare.”
