Ayrshire's most senior police officer has issued a weekend travel warning as restrictions on movement ease from today, allowing locals to go further afield.

Ayrshire Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Faroque Hussain has warned of "increased traffic on our roads" and has reminded the public if they are visiting a beauty spot, to act "safely and respectfully" and to be mindful of littering and parking.

It comes after Nicola Sturgeon announced earlier this week that the easing of travel restrictions would be brought forward, meaning Scots can cross county lines and travel throughout Scotland from today, Friday, April 16.

Gatherings of six people from six households are also now permitted, giving people greater freedom to reunite with loved ones, outdoors only.

Chief Superintendent Faroque Hussain said: “I would like to thank the vast majority of people who are sticking to the rules to suppress the spread of coronavirus.

"The sacrifices people have made have allowed some restrictions around travel and gatherings to be eased from Friday.

Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald:

"We are going to see increased traffic on our roads and if you are visiting beauty spots then I would urge you to please do so safely and respectfully - leaving no trace of your visit. Please also park responsibly to allow emergency access."

He added: "I would also remind people that under the new restrictions, gatherings are limited to six people from six households meeting outdoors only.

"Our approach throughout the pandemic has been to engage with the public, explain the legislation and encourage compliance, but we will not hesitate to use our enforcement powers as a last resort.

"This approach will continue as restrictions continue to be eased over the coming months”

From April 26, travel restrictions are expected to be eased even more so, allowing for Scots to venture to England and Wales.

Travel to Northern Ireland and Common Travel areas such as Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man is being kept under review.
