BRINGING the history and lives of the people of Ardrossan to life is set to be a major part of the regeneration of the town.

At a virtual meeting of Ardrossan Connections on Tuesday, Sustrans Cycle Network, the team behind the plan to give the town a makeover, asked residents for their ideas on how to commemorate the history.

And installing interactive plaques around Glasgow Street, Montgomerie Street, Princes Street, the marina and South Beach were a popular choice.

Historian Peter McCaughey was inspired by the stories from the residents about the people who had come from the area.

“It would be great to use these voices and quotes about people in the town, about their lives and create something interactive,” said Peter.

“It could be anything from scanning a QR code in about the person from a plaque to a phone booth where you could hear stories and also tell your own, this area is steeped in so much history, we are spoiled for choice.”

The meeting also discussed plans to boost Princes Street and Glasgow Street through landscaping and murals on wall space that was currently a blank canvas.

Bringing the town’s history to life is something that the residents and the Sustrans team was focused on achieving.

Eilidh Russell, community engagement officer from Sustrans said: “The workshops have focused on design and on heritage of the town. The knowledge and ideas from the people who volunteered to take part has been fantastic

and we look forward to taking these ideas and moving forward with the project.”

Now, the team behind the project will work on the ideas from the design workshop and in the summer will hold another meeting to look at the plans and take it forward.
