A 57-year-old man has died after being rescued from the water behind Robertson's Meats yesterday. 

The death is being treated by police as unexplained but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

We reported yesterday how emergency services scrambled to the area behind the slaughterhouse off Princes Street around 5.05pm after a person was reported to be in distress. 

Police confirmed that a man was recovered with the assistance of the HM Coastguard and was taken to Crosshouse Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Cops also confirmed that a probe had been launched to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers in Ardrossan can confirm that a 57-year-old man who had been recovered from the water off Princes Street shortly after 5.50pm on Tuesday, June 1, and taken to Crosshouse Hospital has died.

“The death is being treated as unexplained but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
