WORK on the new flats at the site of the former Green Street Hostel in Saltcoats was halted this week as the demolition team discovered a seagull’s nest tucked away in the roof of the building.

The team from George Beattie and Sons found the nest on Monday at the other side of the building to where they had been focusing their demolition work.

The hostel is being torn down to build 24 new flats for disabled and non-disabled tenants.

One worker told the Herald: “We noticed that round the front in the roof was a nest. We stopped straight away and called the clerk of works and the SSPCA.”

A spokesperson for Cunninghame Housing Association said they were aware of the situation and no eggs were found inside the nest.
