A GREEN-MINDED athletics club has donated £350 to support the planting of trees in the Three Towns.

The gesture will support North Ayrshire Council’s strategy to help tackle climate change.

The money, which will be used to plant trees in the Three Towns, has been set aside from North Ayrshire Athletics Club’s upcoming Festival of Running revenue.

Previously, the funds have been uses to buy t-shirts for the race’s participants but this year the club has decided to contribute to sustainable community projects.

Kirsteen Brown, club president, said: “As a club, we are always striving to do more to help the community we serve.

“Our volunteers and club members are involved in a number of community initiatives to help develop North Ayrshire and provide opportunities for people to thrive on and off the athletics track.”

The donation will support the 2030 Woodland strategy which aims to see 108,000 planted within this decade.

It is hoped planting will be completed by 2026 to ensure saplings are on their way to maturity by the net-zero target date.

Councillor Jim Montgomerie said: “It is tremendous news that North Ayrshire Athletics Club wishes to contribute to help make North Ayrshire a greener and healthier place for everyone.

“Their donation will allow new trees to be planted in the Three Towns which will not only enhance the natural landscape, but also help absorb carbon from the environment.

“Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the world and we all have a part to play in helping to tackle the issue.”
