We often think drivers see speed cameras as the enemy.

However, in June 2019, an AA Populus poll asked its members if it was acceptable to use speed cameras to identify vehicles involved in speeding offences.

Eight out of 10 people said yes.

Speed cameras are an important tool in maintaining and improving road safety.

They keep drivers on their best behaviour and make roads safer.

That means they should only be a burden for bad drivers.

An LSE study showed that from 1992 to 2016, speed cameras reduced accidents by between 17 per cent to 39 per cent. They reduced fatalities by between 58 per cent to 68 per cent. And the effects were seen within 500 metres of the cameras.

And for many people in Ayrshire, they agree that more roads should have them to make them safer to use.

We asked Herald readers where they would like to see a new speed camera, and this just some of the places they suggested.
