Beith track star Jemma Reekie has been selected to represent Scotland at next year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

With under 300 days to go until Birmingham 2022, the first athletes to be selected for Team Scotland have been revealed. Joining Jemma, will be Laura Muir, Josh Kerr, Jake Wightman, Eilish McColgan, and Andy Butchart, who have all been selected on the back of strong performances at the Tokyo Olympic Games earlier this year.

Jemma Reekie has seen her track career take off in recent years, becoming European Junior champion in the 1500m in 2017 and then Double European U23 champion in 2019 in the 800m and 1500m disciplines.

She then came in at fourth place in the 800m in Tokyo, her first Olympic Games.

Elinor Middlemiss, Team Scotland Chef de Mission, said: “We are delighted to welcome our first athletes to Team Scotland for Birmingham 2022.

“Glasgow and Gold Coast were very successful for athletics and with such a high-calibre line-up showing their commitment to the Commonwealth Games in this first wave of selections, I am confident of another strong result in Birmingham.

“Congratulations to all athletes selected, as well as their families, clubs and coaches, and we look forward to Team Scotland 2022 taking shape over the coming

months.”
