A car chase suspect in Ayrshire was caught after a police helicopter spotted them trying to hide in a river last night, say officers.

Police Scotland shared details of the spectacular chase, which occurred in Kilwinning in the early hours of Wednesday morning, on the Twitter page of their Air Unit.

They tell how North Ayrshire police were pursuing two suspects who had reportedly fled from a vehicle following a chase.

In their attempts to track down the suspects, local officers drafted in the support of the Police Scotland Air Unit and a helicopter was dispatched to Kilwinning to locate the runaways.

According to police, one of the suspects decided to submerge themself in the River Garnock in an attempt to avoid detection.

However, a photo taken from the police chopper at 1.21am shows a person clearly visible in the water with a police dog and officer in hot pursuit.

Police confirmed that both suspects were arrested.

The Police Scotland Air Unit tweeted: "Police helicopter assisted North Ayrshire police colleagues [in] Kilwinning last night in locating two suspects who had made off from a vehicle following a car chase.

"One suspect attempted to hide from police in the river. Both arrested."
