A weather warning has been issued advising people in Scotland to brace for strong winds in the next few days.

Weekend travel plans look likely to be disrupted as 50mph gusts coming from the west are predicted.

Coastal areas will be particularly badly affected with fears that a danger to life is posed from "large waves and beach material being thrown onto susceptible sea fronts, coastal roads and properties".

A yellow alert has been issued by the Met Office lasting from 4am tomorrow until midday on Monday.

Strong westerly winds will bring some disruption on Saturday to Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and northern England say the Met Office.

They say people should be prepared for:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Some roads and bridges may close
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto susceptible sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
