NORTH Ayrshire’s MP has challenged the UK Government on its lack of inaction as energy bills rise.

Households across the country are facing the reality of rising inflation and interest rates, wages falling, a national insurance increase and an increase in energy bills.

Last week the Herald asked North Ayrshire residents if they worry about rising energy costs.

One commenter said: “Yep I’m worried. My bill has came in and it’s £540 for three months and that’s only for electricity...”, while another added: “Yes I already pay nearly £200 a month living on benefits with a child with disabilities who needs heating on for their chest and uses equipment that is constantly on charge.”

Another person added: “I cannot keep up with gas, leccy and petrol. Prices are shocking. My gas and leccy have literally doubled.”

Patricia Gibson MP said: “Last week I challenged the UK Government on its lack of inaction, as energy costs soar, and millions face unaffordable bills.

“The UK has the highest poverty and inequality in north-west Europe.

"With inflation climbing and National Insurance contributions rising, as incomes stagnate, many people already struggling will reach breaking point.

“Shamefully, Tory MPs voted down a reduction in VAT on energy bills and the annual price cap is set to rise from £1,277 to £2,000 in April.

“I secured a debate on the cost of living crisis for Tuesday, 25 January, and will renew my calls for the UK Government to support small, struggling energy companies, halt the energy price cap increase and reintroduce the £20 universal credit uplift.

"Households need help right now.

“The Scottish Child Payment should be replicated across the UK, the real living wage introduced and sick pay increase.

"We must protect families and pensioners.”
