NORTH Ayrshire Police are appealing for information regarding a number of recent incidents involving stones or similar objects being thrown from footbridges onto live traffic.

Since August of last year there have been several reports of such incidents.

Three of these have seen objects thrown from the Castlepark footbridge in Irvine onto the A78.

These took place at 3.45pm on August 28, 8.20pm on November 21 and January 19 of this year at 4.50pm.

An incident also took place at Paterson Avenue footbridge, with missiles again launched towards the A78.

This was at 5.35pm on January 20, only a day later than one of the previous reports.

While at 2.05pm on January 23, objects were thrown from the Towerlands Interchange/Stanecastle roundabout onto Long Drive.

Regarding these incidents, a police spokesperson said this week: “This is a highly irresponsible and reckless act which could have caused serious injury.

“We are keen to speak with anyone who has information regarding these incidents to quickly trace those responsible.”

The officer said that not all incidents will result in a car being physically struck, however, this does not make the act any less dangerous.

They added: “Patrols will be carried out in the area to provide reassurance, prevent further incidents and deal with crimes detected.

“Anyone with information that can help identify the person/s responsible can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”

Police also fear younger children may become involved with the incidents and are urging parents to speak to their children, and highlight the dangers and repercussions of such acts.
