North Ayrshire's Provost is to step down due to ill health after nearly 30 years' service.

Provost Ian Clarkson, councillor for Irvine West, confirmed this week that he will not be standing in the forthcoming local elections in May and thanked constituents for their support over the past 27 years as a councillor.

Cllr Clarkson said: "It is with the greatest of regret that due to ill health, I am unable to put my name forward for reselection for the council election in May.

"It has been a great privilege and pleasure, challenging and worthwhile, serving individuals and communities of North Ayrshire, in various positions, over the past 27 years.

"I wish to thank all the officers within the council who have been on this fantastic journey with me.

"My best wishes to all constituents who have assisted me in contributing to a better life for many.

"I wish you all the very best of health and happiness."

Labour group leader, Joe Cullinane, said: “It is very sad that Ian’s public service is coming to an end due to ill health.

"He has represented his community for many years, helping thousands of local people along the way. He will be missed by many constituents and groups as their local councillor.

"He has been an excellent Provost over the last five-and-a-half years and I hope he is remembered for the contribution he made in the role.

"I wish Ian all the best with his current health battles.”

Donald Reid, Labour group secretary, added: "The Scottish Labour party acknowledges Ian's long service to the party as an officer and councillor. We offer our sincere thanks and best wishes to him, wife Liz and Ian's family on his retiral from office in May."

Cllr Clarkson's service with the council included positions of Provost, Depute Provost, chair of licensing board, and chair of Marymass.

He also represents North Ayrshire Council on the Lowland Reserve Forces, Cadets Association, Scottish Parliament cross party group for veterans, and the West of Scotland Archaeology Service, as well as being North Ayrshire Veterans Champion.
