A SALTCOATS man has captured still images of one of the most spectacular sights on earth - over Ayrshire.
Photographer Chris Wright took the fantastic photos of the aurora borealis, otherwise known as the northern lights, along the coast at Portencross near West Kilbride on February 10 between 6.30pm and 8pm.
Chris told the Herald: "It felt amazing to see them. I have seen them plenty of times before but that was by far the best and it was clearly visible by eye."
The natural electrical phenomenon is rarely seen in Scotland, and shows as streams of reddish or greenish light in the sky near the northern pole.
The effect is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with atoms in the upper atmosphere.
All photos were taken by Chris Wright.
