A SALTCOATS boxer has now raised around £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK following his most recent fundraising endeavour.

Devin Cameron, a former Ardrossan Academy pupil, completed 25 rounds of sparring with various donators who paid to take part.

This, alongside people being able to watch at the IMC Project gym, meant almost £200 was raised from the challenge.

Devin said: “I’d raised over £700 last year running two half-marathons in two days, so as a follow up me and my coach decided a sponsored spar would make sense.

“I chose Prostate Cancer UK as my Papa Tommy is currently suffering from terminal prostate cancer and I can’t change that, so the only thing I can do is raise funds to hopefully contribute towards a cure.

“The challenge was harder mentally than physically. I’d already tested myself physically beforehand to make sure I’d be able to handle it, but after 20 rounds or so I was mentally exhausted.”

The event took place at Cllr Jim Montgomerie’s IMC Project gym, with the man himself sparring for eight rounds.

Devin thanked him for this, and for letting him use the gym, adding thanks to Anton Jack who also sparred five rounds.

Cllr Montgomerie also commented: “It was a great day had by all. Lots of youngsters took part in this fabulous charitable event not only to raise funds but also to raise awareness for prostate cancer.

“Devin did amazing, it’s certainly no easy feat. Devin is very committed to The IMC Project and he epitomises everything the project is about.”

Devin says he plans to continue fundraising throughout the year, both personally and as part of the IMC Project’s efforts to provide a trip to Everest base camp.
