A CENTENARY service will take place this week to mark 100 years since the unveiling of the Saltcoats War Memorial.

The special rededication event will be held on Friday, May 27 – exactly a century on from the memorial first being erected.

Dedicated to the loved ones from local families who were sadly lost during what was then called The Great War, veterans and members of the community will join together at the memorial in a show of love, respect and gratitude to those named on it.

During the service there will be the opportunity for relatives of those named on the memorial to lay a tribute to their forefathers.

This will be followed by dignitaries and members of the community wishing to pay their floral respects.

Organisers, the Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS), are especially keen to welcome any centenarians who wish to attend the event.

To mark the occasion, the Saltcoats Heritage Centre will be open as usual all week plus a special opening on Friday for those wishing to seek further information.

Paul Coffey, president of the SAS RBLS branch, said: “Please join us for this once in a lifetime, Remembrance milestone for both families and our community as we show our gratitude for those who paid the ultimate price so many years ago.”

The service will start at 10.45am on May 27, at Saltcoats memorial.

Anyone attending is asked to be careful as traffic will still be driving past the memorial during the service.

Legion members also paid their respects recently on the 77th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. During the service in Saltcoats prayers were also said in support of Ukraine and its besieged population, as the conflict with Russia continues.
