COUNCIL bosses have been slammed for a blunder which has seen the name of one of Scotland's most famous entertainers mis-spelled on signs and boards around the town.

Sir Billy Connolly features in signs and boards put up by South Ayrshire Council around the town celebrating 'Shadows of the Past...Ayr's Myths, Legends and History'.

But the signs spell the surname of one of the country's most famous sons not as Connolly but Connelly.

The signs say: "In the mid 20th century, Ayr's folk scene was brimming with talent welcoming Scotland's modern 'bard' Billy Connelly to perform in the popular folk venue of Loudon Hall."

Born in Glasgow in 1942, Sir Billy was made a CBE in 2003 and was knighted in 2017.

He announced his retirement in 2018, and earlier this month received a BAFTA Fellowship in recognition of his long and distinguished career.

A spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council said: "The spelling on the silhouette board has now been corrected. Updated interpretation signage has gone to print and will replace the current sign once ready."
