A SALTCOATS teen has edged closer to his fund-raising goal as he looks to support his aunt in her cancer battle.

Jack Havlin, 19, held his latest event last weekend, June 18, as his young (under-30s) side took on the old team (over-30s) in a football match held at Barrfields Park in Largs.

This is the latest in a long line of fund-raising efforts for Jack’s aunt Carly Carlin, who suffers from a form of cancer called peritoneal mesothelioma.

This is linked to the ingestion of asbestos at some point in her life, and Carly has said that she now “lives for the day”.

The cancer is incurable, but with treatment, patients can have extended life expectancies beyond their initial prognosis.

Any money raised is going to the Beatson Cancer Charity, and Jack’s efforts, when added to that of Carly’s husband Tony and brother Andrew, will now go beyond the £8,000 mark.

Carly said: “The Beatson has been great with me and I need them more than ever now.”

The overall aim for the fund-raiser is to push towards £10,000, so the £2,125 raised by the charity match (at the time of writing) has helped considerably.

The game itself saw the sides draw 2-2, with Jack Havlin’s ‘young team’ taking home the win via a penalty shoot-out.

After the match, everyone headed back to the Ardrossan Masonic, where a great evening was enjoyed by all.

Speaking after the event, Carly said: “Wow. It has taken me all day to process the success of yesterday and it still all feels a bit surreal.

“From the minute we arrived at Largs Thistle to the turn out at Ardrossan Masonic club was way beyond our expectations.

“Thank you all very much. There are so many people to thank for their help, support and hands-on throughout the day/night I will be in touch with them personally.”

While Jack himself extended “a massive thank you” to everyone that attended the event, and supported the family and Beatson Cancer Charity.
