A STEVENSTON running star has made it a double as she once again became a national champion this month – at a second different distance.

Meredith Reid, 18, was competing in the 10K national road race championships, held in Kilmarnock, once again winning the contest in the under-20s category.

She adds this to her winners medal in the 5K edition of this event.

Even more impressive for the teen, who is competing at under-20s level for the first time this season, is that she was second overall for senior women.

She was pipped to the title only by an athlete who has qualified for this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

Speaking to the Herald, Meredith said: “It was definitely an experience finishing second at a Scottish senior level, I’m really pleased with it, obviously winning my age group as well.

“I feel like it’s going to take some time to absorb the fact that I’ve came second in Scotland at a senior level.

“It definitely does give me confidence, it’s really flattering to know that I’ve come up there in a senior level.

“I’m pleased to get another under-20 title, it’s amazing.”

Meredith’s time of 35 minutes and four seconds saw her finish over two minutes ahead of second place in her age group, and she says adapting to the longer distance comes naturally to her.

She commented: “My strength has always been my endurance, going double the distance wasn’t really too much of an issue. For me the further the better.”

Her next contest comes in little over a week’s time, as she competes in the British Championships over another different distance, three kilometres.
