A KILWINNING takeaway has walked away from a national awards ceremony as champions.

The Viking Cafe claimed top prize in the ‘kebab takeaway of the year’ category at the Scottish Takeaway Awards 2022, winning for both the west region, and for Scotland overall.

Based on Almswall Road, the eatery has been a mainstay in the town since it first opened in 2014.

They have even begun to branch out, opening a second store in Saltcoats just over a year ago.

Owner Wael Manasra said: “It’s a good achievement, after a lot of hard work, all the restrictions. The main thing is all the staff are really happy about what they have achieved.”

He said they did not find out about their win until the night of the award.

“We are so confident with the quality we provide,” he commented.

Quality was at the forefront of Wael’s mind when he was discussing the prize, something the takeaway has become more than accustomed to over the years.

He continued: “We use top quality ingredients, and we don’t use colouring or anything with e-numbers, and we always try and use products that are fresh as they can be.

“We are always trying to keep the food top quality and looking for new ingredients, and we will always change the menu. Whether it’s something we think needs changed, or something the customers don’t like.

“That’s why we have Facebook, TripAdvisor and Google feedback. We always look after the customer, and we see their opinion and we always try and improve our service.

“I just want my customers to be happy with the service we provide.”

Wael also wanted to acknowledge all who made the award possible, as he sets his sights on more.

He said: “I’d like to thank my staff, and all our Ayrshire customers. Without them we would not have a business and without my team that keep providing the good quality for the customers.

“Everyone is happy with the service they get, and hopefully there will be more.”
