NORTH Ayrshire Council are offering residents an opportunity to collect free wood and wood chip in Dreghorn next week.

The wood chip can be used to spruce up gardens by using it for landscaping, pathways and surfacing play areas while the wood logs can be used for a variety of projects.

Those wishing to collect a share of the free wood on offer can do so from the former Dreghorn recycling centre on Wednesday, August 10, from 10am-2pm, or Thursday, August 11, from 5-8pm.

The event forms part of the council’s focus on sustainability. By giving away the wood they have collected for local reuse, the council can avoid the environmental impact and costs of transporting and processing the wood for recycling or energy recovery.

The wood has been collected as part of the NAC's regular maintenance work to trim and remove trees.

Councillor Scott Davidson, cabinet member for place, said: “This wood giveaway is a great opportunity for residents.

“By reusing the wood our Streetscene team has collected as part of their everyday work duties, we are minimising our environmental impact by using it to stage a worthwhile community event.

“It is very much part of our council commitment to sustainability. I would encourage all those who could make use of the wood to head along and grab a share.”

Wood supplies are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. In the interest of fairness, there will be limits to the quantity of wood collected per person.

You must bring your own bags or storage boxes, and council officers will be on site throughout the day and will require to see proof of North Ayrshire residency, such as a driver’s licence or utility bill, before allowing entry.
