The main road connection the Three Towns and West Kilbride to Fairlie and Largs is set to close for the weekend.

The A78, from the Hunterston roundabout to Fairlie, will be completely shut off from 5am tomorrow, Saturday August 13, and remain so until 6am on Monday, August 15.

Only emergency blue light vehicles will be allowed to use the route during this time.

Regular traffic, both north and south bound, will be diverted onto the A760 Haylie Brae. Those driving to and from the Three Towns and West Kilbride, this will mean joining this road via the B780 then B784 in Dalry.

The area is to be closed off to allow for the demolition of the iconic overhead conveyor structure, which was used to transport coal and iron ore.

It is the last remaining part of the giant structure, which transported to goods from ships bething at the terminal on the wayer, to the rail yard above the A78. Here it was loaded into wagons to be transported elsewhere in Scotland.

Original plans for the system were approved back in 1970 and it was used to feed supplies to Ravenscraig steeleworks in Motherwell.

When this was closed in 1992, the conveyor was used to unload coal to be transported to power stations in Fife and Yorkshire.

Part of the reason behind the structures removal now, is to make way for XCLL's new cable making factory, which could see up to 900 job brought back to the area.

Plans for this factory were approved back in July of this year.
