Plans have been submitted to North Ayrshire Council which could see 50 new homes for social rent built at the former Garnock Academy site in Kilbirnie.

The area has been left unused since the new Garnock Community Campus opened in January 2017.

An application was submitted for a 'certificate of lawfulness' for the proposed development at the end of last month, before being validated on August 10.

A certificate of lawfulness is essentially a means of obtaining a decision from the planning authority that a proposed use or works do not require planning permission.

The proposed 50 new homes would be split into 18 different blocks.

They would include 28 general needs houses, 13 amenity bungalows, two wheelchair liveable houses, and seven houses for ground floor living.

All homes would include parking facilities, with an additional 15 spaces to be created for visitors to the development.

In the same general area, is the proposed new primary school to replace the existing Moorpark Primary.

Work began on the new £10.85 million facility in September 2021 and is due to be complete this autumn.
