A “person centred” approach to visiting patients which has resulted in several restrictions being lifted or lessened has been announced by NHS Ayrshire and Arran.

Announced on September 26, the new approach supports visiting between 8am until 10pm, no matter the day but supports visits outside of these times where possible.

However, visitors are asked to stay no longer than one hour unless otherwise arranged with staff.

Additionally, only two visitors will be allowed to attend at the same time in order to prevent overcrowding in shared areas.

The rules also affect visitation to maternity wards as two birthing partners can attend the labour ward and midwifery suite for labour and birth.

Only one partner can be present for elective caesarean births, the induction of labour, and outpatient appointments or the assessment unit at Ayrshire Maternity Unit.

Nurse Director, Jennifer Wilson, said: “After significant visiting restrictions over the last two years, it is wonderful to now be at a point where we can introduce our new person centred approach.

“We recognise the hugely important part family and friends can play in a patient’s healthcare journey and recovery. We believe that visiting should be considered a central part of patient care and that visits should be at a time that is convenient to both the patient and the visitor.

“We look forward to welcoming more visitors to our sites and want them to know that they are very welcome. If visitors and staff can work together with respect and kindness this will ensure the best visiting experience for everyone.”
