A Largs photographer was delighted to snap a historic shot of Jupiter last night.

Jack Boyle captured the gas giant and three of its moons as it made its closest pass to Earth in 59 years.

The planet was 367 million miles from Earth, and will not be that close again until 2129.

Viewers with high-tech cameras or telescopes could even spot the planet's distinctive rings as well as its iconic Great Red Spot.

It takes Jupiter 12 years to travel around the sun, compared to just one here on Earth.
