AN ARDROSSAN man was jailed for three months after damaging a vehicle with a piece of wood and lobbing a glass bottle at a passing car during a drunken rant towards his neighbours.

Scott Crawford appeared from custody at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on September 22 having been fully committed for a separate matter - and Sheriff Alistair Watson said he had no choice but to send the 26-year-old to prison given his circumstances.

The Barrie Terrace man pleaded guilty to two charges: maliciously damaging a vehicle by striking it with a piece of wood, and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting, swearing and throwing a glass bottle at a passing vehicle on July 15 last year.

Crawford admitted causing a small dent to the wing of a vehicle after striking it with the piece of wood.

On the day of the incident, at around 3.30pm, a neighbour observed Crawford shouting and swearing at people in his home.

The procurator fiscal depute told the court hearing: "The neighbour was placed in a state of fear and alarm.

"Other neighbours came out and noticed the accused in possession of a piece of wood and damage to a vehicle that was not there before.

"The accused then started shouting at an unknown male within the street and walked in the direction of Glasgow Street. He continued to act in a threatening or abusive manner.

"The accused was punched by the other male and they made off in opposite directions.

"He then walked up Barrie Terrace and picked up a glass bottle and threw it onto the road in the direction of a passing vehicle. It missed and smashed on the roadway."

Crawford's defence solicitor said his client had ongoing issues with his neighbours and drink had been taken.

The solicitor added: "He does not often have his troubles to seek."

Sheriff Watson sentenced Crawford, who has a criminal record dating back to 2012, to a three-month custodial sentence, stating that no alternative was available due to the nature of the charges and his circumstances.
