THE A78 shore road between Ardrossan and West Kilbride was closed for a period of time yesterday to allow for a controlled explosion.

Police were alerted to an incident yesterday, October 18, regarding the discovery of what was believed to be an "unexploded ordnance device".

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) had to attend the scene on West Kilbride beach, so that the item could be safely detonated.

While their was no need for the area to be evacuated, the A78 road connecting Ardrossan to the village had to be closed for around five minutes while this took place.

Those around the scene at the time claim that the 'explosive' item was found on the area of the beach around the S-bend on the road.

While another alleged they saw cops looking "under the wee bridge in front of Glenfoot" around the time of the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said:"Around 3.15 pm on Tuesday, 18 October 2022, police were called following the discovery of what was thought to be an unexploded ordnance device on West Kilbride beach.

"The EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) attended and the item was detonated. There was no requirement for any evacuation.  As a precaution, the A78 was closed for approximately five minutes during the detonation.

"No further police action."

The alleged explosive was found by Marion McGinn who was out for a "random walk" when she stumbled upon the terrifying object.

She shared images of her find with the Herald, as well as a video of the controlled explosion which took place after she reported this.

She said: "It was a random day, I walked from Ardrossan to Portencross, picking up microplastic and glass to make jewellery from, and back when I found a leg plastic leg!

"Then I found a clear quartz crystal when I went to pick it up I seen the bomb and called it in."

It is the second time this year that an unexploded piece of ordnance has been reported on the stretch of beach.

Back in May, fire crews and the EOD team attended an area of Seamill beach adjacent to West Kilbride Golf Club following a similar report.

Golfers were unable to play the stretch of holes which runs parallel to the beach at the time - however no detonation ever had to take place.

The A78 road is now open as normal following the brief closure yesterday.
