Members of the Ayrshire Philatelic Society met last week for their traditional ‘Alphabet Night’.

With the night dedicated to the president of the post stamp enthusiast society’s initials - letters A and W for Allan White - members shared the ‘weird and wonderful’ items they own.

A representative from the society, David Rossall, said: “Ken Gibb started the displays with items weird and wonderful plus assorted items beginning with A.

“Ian Barker followed with two boards on Welsh Railways - Ffestiniog and David Bowman gave us the first two presidents of the USA - George Washington in numerous forms and John Adams.”

The first round concluded with Robert Watt sharing postal items from the islands Wallis and Fortuna in the South Pacific Ocean, and Württemberg in Germany with the group.

David continued: “The second round comprised four boards each from Dan Ross with Ayrshire Postal History, and Ian Smith showing the American Civil War through stamps, miniature sheets and photographs including items from Sierra Leone, St Kitts and Grenada.

“The third round started with Australia in the 80s and 90s from Russell Ramsay.”

Continuing, member John Chalmers brought recent findings of Canadian first day covers, while David shared 1920s issues from White Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Finally, recently appointed president Alan White - who was showed material from Alderney that dates between 1983-1998.
