Saltcoats veterans have enjoyed a “great banter” and “a good laugh” as they caught up with each other during a day of bowling.

The Saltcoats Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club visited Ardrossan Indoor Bowling Club on Thursday October 20.

Club member and representative Paul Coffey said: “It’s almost magic when a couple or more veterans get together, although most have close friends and family, it’s when the veterans get together and the banter starts. You can see the loneliness, isolation, pain, disability, and age slip away for a wee while at least.

“Veterans do what we always did and do and that’s looking after each other, the sense of humour is unequalled as it was when we served. It can be hard, rough and easily misunderstood by outsiders, but that’s what got us through some difficult times as it probably has for generations of military.

“The bowling was a welcome break with new and old friends, laughter at the antics of the very nonprofessional players, but all had a go.”

Funding for the trip came as courtesy of Age Scotland’s COVERT Challenge which saw the club’s walking group receive a cash award.

Members were excited to be able to meet again after pandemic restrictions and their aftermath left the group unable to hold social activities.

Commenting on the fun, Eddie, aged 94, said: “A day to remember because of the members and friends, very enjoyable.”

Maggie, aged 65, continued: “It was really good fun, and great to have fun with other veterans and a catch-up with others.”

Paul, aged 69, added: “Fun, harder than it looks but laughter all the way. Banter and mick-taking were the rules of the day.”

The club meets every Monday morning at the Melbourne Café in Saltcoats and membership is completely free.
