THE sentencing handed down to convicted rapist and sexual predator Russell Conn has been welcomed by police and a national children's charity.

Earlier today (December 22), Conn was sentenced to nine years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow after being convicted of one charge of rape and four of sexual assault.

He was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

Police Scotland commended the victims who came forward for the bravery they showed in doing so.

Detective Inspector Gavin Chisholm of the rape and domestic abuse unit said: “I would like to commend the victims for their bravery shown in coming forward, and throughout this process.

“Russell Conn committed offences against children spanning many years and we welcome today’s sentencing.

"Investigating the abuse of children and young people remains a top priority for Police Scotland.

"I hope this outcome will give confidence to anyone who is experiencing, or who has experienced abuse to come forward, knowing that we will do everything we can to arrest the perpetrators and achieve justice.”

Meanwhile, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) Scotland added that they hope the victims now get the support they need due to the "devastating impact" of Conn's actions.

An NSPCC Scotland spokesperson said: “Conn’s victims have lived for many years with the devastating impact of this abuse and knowing that Conn had not faced justice.

"We hope they get the help and support they need now to move on with their lives.

“We would urge anyone who has experienced abuse, no matter who the perpetrator was or when it took place, to reach out and seek any support they might need."
