POLICE have confirmed that five vehicles were involved in a collision near the Pennyburn roundabout in Stevenston.

The incident occurred just before 5.30pm today, January 16, on the A78 road connecting Irvine, Kilwinning and the Three Towns.

Road users reported gridlock in the area just after the crash, though it had cleared by later in the evening.

Police say they do not believe there to be any injuries or casualties.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 5.25pm today (January 16), police were called to a road traffic collision involving five vehicles on the A78 near Pennyburn Roundabout.

"There are no reports of anyone being injured.

"Arrangements are being made to uplift the vehicles."

It becomes the latest of a string of incidents on the road - with a similar crash involving three vehicles occurring as recently as December.

Also in December, 12 vehicles were involved in a crash on the A78 near the Eglinton interchange.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Scottish Ambulance Service have also been approached for comment.
