PLANS have been lodged with North Ayrshire Council to build 10 flats in West Kilbride.

The proposed development, proposed by Atelier-M Ltd on behalf of John Wright Properties Ltd, would be situated on the currently barren land at 15 Ardrossan Road - formerly home to the Galleon Inn Hotel which was demolished in 2014.

The block of flats would border a mainly residential area on Ardrossan Road and extend down the steep slope (of roughly 6m) of land, forming another border onto Hyndman Road.

It would extend over six stories, with four of these containing the living accomodation itself, which would feature two one bedroomed flats, five two bedroomed homes, and three flats containing three bedrooms.

Of these six stories, only four would extend above ground level on the Ardrossan Road side of the development.

The ground floor of the building would be used for 'storage' purposes, with the top storey containing only a roof parapet in part - with the remaining roof area to feature a solar panel system.

Almost every flat would be unique in nature, with only two homes intended to be designed in an identical manner.

As well as creating the flats, a further 14 parking spaces would be created for the property, and these would be accessed via Hyndman Road.

Documents supporting the plans further detail the hopes for the development.

They state: "The apartments strive to continue formal and traditional facade styles of West Kilbride, while managing to exploit the spectacular westerly views through high levels of glazing when facing away from the street."

The development would look to take advantage of these surroundings, but also take into account the weather, by including winter gardens, which can be opened when the weather allows, and large bay windows looking out across the Firth of Clyde.

They also further detail that the development would be in keeping with similar homes already in the area - particulary the two blocks just to the north of the site sandwiched between Faulds Wynd and Ardrossan Road.

The application becomes the latest of many proposed for the village of West Kilbride - which have divided opinion.

This application was only submitted to North Ayrshire Council as planning authority on January 24, and already one objection has been received.

This highlighted alleged flaws in the site boundary with Faulds Wynd, fears regarding noise pollution, a loss of privacy for neighbouring properties and that the development would significantly overshadow properties and result in a loss of light and outlook.

The objection comment also added: "I would question the necessity/need for such a significant development in this small area and whether the proposed development is in keeping with the properties in Faulds Wynd and Hyndman Road.

"I do not believe the flats would be in keeping with the aforementioned developments and, again, believe that they may have a detrimental impact on the value properties.

"I also question the need for so many flats/bedrooms in an area which has recently been subject to a new development with another proposed and significant development proposed near Summerlea Road.

"This proposed development would only serve to put further pressure on the town infrastructure whereby we have a school, GP surgery, dentist and pharmacy already unable to cope with current demand.

"I do not believe that there is a 'need' for this development and that the proposed number of flats and bedrooms are excessive."
