THE owners of a popular village pub and restaurant in North Ayrshire have announced they have put the business up for sale.

Holly and Kenny from The Gateside Inn, in Gateside, near Beith, confirmed the news on their social media page yesterday, January 25.

They say it was a "very difficult decision" to make, having spent "16 fantastic years" operating the establishment.

Holly said in the couple's announcement: "After nearly 16 fantastic years in the GSI (Gateside Inn) Kenny and I have made the very difficult decision to put The Gateside Inn on the market.

"It has been an absolute pleasure to have owned this smashing wee pub for all those years but we are now ready for a change of pace and new challenges in our lives.

"We have made lots of new friends and have helped so many people celebrate various special occasions in their lives.

"A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years. We will keep you updated on any news from here."

And the news left many locals shocked and saddened as they wished the pair the best of luck for the future.

One well-wisher commented: "Aww end of an era! I wish you, Kenny and the girls all the best in ur next adventure!

"Thanks for the memories in the GSI! Always a great place to have a drink with great friends."

Another added: "Best of luck to you both. I must admit I’m soooo sad, but completely understand your decision.

"Thanks to the above and beyond service you and all the lovely staff do. True legends of Gateside."

And others found it hard to put into words just what the pub has meant to them.

Another emotional comment read: "Thank you for giving us the best wee village pub in the world with the best landlady that ever was.

"I would lose count if I was to recall all the happy memories made in the GSI. From working in it to drinking in it, the food, the food, family gatherings, Christmas Days, Hogmanays, Hallowe'en parties, kids parties, endless celebrations and lots of love and laughter, not to mention our epic dancing on the tables and the bar.

"Filled with love and happiness that will last forever. You brought our community together and the GSI and your warm welcome was the heart."

The "attractive and characterful Village Inn" has already been put on the market through estate agents Daltons Business.

It has been listed for a price of £399,950 - though for locals, the memories the pub has brought under Kenny and Holly will be priceless.
