Parents and carers of youths with disabilities and long-term health conditions are being invited to an upcoming employability event.

The Local Employability Partnership will hold a meeting in Stevenston’s Lockhart Campus on Thursday, March 9 between 4.30pm and 7.30pm.

Created through Sense Scotland and North Ayrshire Council’s Equal Programme, the partnership looks to help young people with disabilities and long-term conditions find work or development opportunities.

Business development manager for Sense Scotland, Chris Mollins, said: “The Local Employability Partnership have developed a series of events to give parents, professionals and employers a chance to learn about the supported progression opportunities (personal development, activities, training, education, volunteering, and employment) in North Ayrshire.

“The parents and carers who we would like to attend are those who support someone who has a disability, learning difficulty or long-term health condition and might be looking to access supported progression in the future and/or are already accessing support but worry about what the future holds.

“[We’d also like to hear from] the parents and carers who have children at school and are thinking about what might come next after they leave.

“We want to connect individuals living across North Ayrshire to share their hopes, anxieties and vision for the future.”

Speakers will be in attendance to share their experiences and an information pack with flyers highlighting the support currently available in North Ayrshire will be given to parents and carers.

The Equal Programme is part of North Ayrshire Council’s employability service Your Next Move, Working North Ayrshire and helps North Ayrshire residents with disabilities find work or gateways into employment.

Equal Programme manager, Linda Ford, said: “Whether it’s personal development, training or tailored employment support that is needed, the council’s Employability service is excited to once again work together with local parents and carers to inspire our future workforce and help to spread the word about the fantastic support incentives and opportunities here in North Ayrshire.

“It’s all about creating a space to listen to and understand what matters to you (or the young person you are supporting) as well as providing a platform to spotlight the current opportunities available.

“Our skilled colleagues in the Equal Team will also be on hand to connect with individuals and help them to network and share their own experiences including their hopes, anxieties and vision for the future.
