North Ayrshire Council aims to raise awareness of coercive control in relationships this International Women’s Day.

In honour of the day, which falls on March 8, the council are working with the Violence Against Women partnership to highlight the support available to sufferers of coercive control through social media.

Coercive control is defined by Women’s Aid as “an act or a pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim.”

Provost Anthea Dickson said: “Often during International Women’s week, we see many other organisations taking to social media to champion equality – and rightly so, as we too believe that everyone should have the same chance to succeed.

“However, by focusing more on equity and the specific issues affecting women in North Ayrshire, we can ensure we even the playing field so that all women in our communities can feel safe and empowered to break down barriers so that they can thrive and live a better life in North Ayrshire.

“This is why we will be using the day to team up with the Violence Against Women Partnership – who bring together vital organisations that have a strategic role in tackling gender-based violence across North Ayrshire – to support those who are affected by domestic violence and coercive control.”

Victims often do not seek help as they are isolated from friends and family and dependent on their abuser.

Through the collaboration, The Violence Against Women Partnership (VAWP) and NAC will use their social media to showcase a series of scenario-based animations exemplifying coercive control.

They will also post links and signposts to any help available for victims.

Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Place said: “By raising public awareness of coercive control this International Women’s Day, we hope that we can encourage more women to come forward and access VAWP support services at a much earlier stage.

“Please help us to share the message this International Women’s Day so we can help more women at risk of harm to understand what a healthy relationship is and get the support they need.”

Those at risk of violence can call the council on 0800 0196 500 or North Ayrshire Women’s Aid between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday on 01294 602 424.
