BUS and cycling projects in Glasgow are to get more than £2m of investment.

The cash allocated by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) includes money for bus lane enforcement cameras and money for bus stop improvements.

There will be £150,000 for cameras to catch people driving in bus lanes.

Already tens of thousands of motorists fall foul of the bus lanes in the city and have to fork out cash to pay for fines.

Around 80,000 bus lane fines were handed out in Glasgow in 2021 costing drivers £60 each.

The fine is halved to £30 if paid within two weeks but increased to £90 if not paid within 28 days.

There are already a number of bus gates around the city centre including Oswald Street, Hope Street, Union Street and Nelson Mandela Place.

Bus lanes operate on a number of main routes in and out of the city centre to speed up travelling by public transport.

£1.5m will be spent on bus stop improvements at Hope Street and Renfield Street.

The plan includes money for improvements to bus routes on Paisley Road West and in Pollok, and for junction improvements at Battlefield Road.

Another £145,000 is for active travel network enhancements which includes the city’s cycle lane network.

Stephen Dornan, chair of SPT, said: “Despite challenging financial pressures, we are making transport in our area greener, more connected, and more reliable and accessible to all.

“Our investment programme announced today will ensure communities, residents and businesses across Glasgow can share in the benefits of improved public transport and active travel.

“We are proud to announce this funding and look forward to working with the local authority and others to progress these projects and deliver transport improvements across the region.”

The money is part of a £14.5m programme for councils in the SPT area this year.
