People on Tax Credits are being urged to take action to ensure they are getting the right amount of benefits.

The UK Government is changing the benefits system meaning more people on tax credits will be told to apply for Universal Credit as the government migrates more people on to the single payment benefit.

From April those affected will need to complete their switch to Universal Credit and are being told to look out for a letter about it.

According to the government, the changes are to “streamline and simplify the benefits system”.

The UK Government said: “In most cases, individuals will be better off following a move from legacy benefits to Universal Credit.

“However, where an individual’s entitlement to Universal Credit would be lower than their legacy benefits entitlement, in the vast majority of cases, they will be entitled to a top-up payment known as Transitional Protection.

“This means that their Universal Credit entitlement will be the same as their legacy benefit entitlement at the point they move.”

People whose claims are affected will receive letters notifying them of action to take.

Guy Opperman, Minister for Employment, said: The movement of those on legacy benefits to Universal Credit will ensure we can continue to provide the best level of support to benefit recipients through an effective and streamlined system.

“This Government remains committed to supporting the most vulnerable in society. I want to encourage all those who receive their migration notices to take action to ensure that they continue to receive the benefits they are entitled to.”

John Lamont, Scotland office minister, said people should get advice if they need help with the changes.

He said: “We understand some people will need additional assistance moving to their new arrangement and that’s why Citizens Advice Scotland is ready to help.

“I’d urge anyone who gets a letter saying their benefits are changing to take action as soon as possible to ensure there’s no gap in receiving the financial assistance they’re entitled to.”
