Police who searched the car of a potential drug supplier found four tubs of cannabis under the driver’s seat.

Officers were on patrol in the car park on Portencross Road near West Kilbride on April 7 when they made the discovery.

The male suspect claimed the cannabis was for personal use, and has been cautioned and charged by police.

A spokesperson said: “About 7:15pm police were on mobile patrol and noted the accused sitting within a black BMW 1 series.

“They were aware of information that the driver of the vehicle may be involved in the supply of drugs.

“Police stopped and spoke with the driver noting a smell of cannabis within the vehicle, and informed the accused that he was being detained in terms of Sec 23 MDA 1971.

“A search of the vehicle and the accused was carried out whereby four small tubs each containing herbal material were recovered from under the driver’s seat.

“The accused made comment to them being cannabis and was for personal use only. No other items were recovered.”

Police say they will continue to actively target drug use and dealing and would encourage any member of the public to report concerns on 101 or via Crimestoppers online or on 0800555111.
