A SHORT service on the Ardrossan seafront on Friday marked 100 years since the unveiling and dedication of the town's war memorial.

The Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston branch of Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS) organised the rededication service to mark the memorial's centenary.

They invited a number of local groups, schools, churches, relatives, members of the public and other interested groups to join them at the memorial on South Crescent Road to participate in the service.

And there were many in attendance when the service took place earlier today.

Paul Coffey, president of the local RBLS branch, introduced the event, while the Rev Don Currie of South Beach Baptist Church led prayers.

Pupils from Ardrossan Academy recited the famous 'They shall not grow old' extract from Laurence Binyon's poem For The Fallen, and the Kohima Epitaph: "When you go home, tell them of us, and say: for your tomorrow, we gave our today."

The pupils also read out the names of everyone who is named on the memorial.

North Ayrshire Council provost Anthea Dickson also paid tribute to those who gave their lives for their country more than a century ago.

The Last Post was sounded to mark the start of a minute's silence, before a solo piper played the lament Flowers Of The Forest.

Local groups and politicians then laid wreaths and tributes at the base of the memorial, behind a newly-installed guard rail bearing the years 1923 and 2023, as the war heroes were remembered - 100 years on.
