WHEN the plans for the new Ardrossan Campus were submitted two weeks ago, it seemed like a real momentous occasion for the new school development.

The in-depth proposals looked to add clarity, and paint a picture for what will be when the school is completed in 2026, as things stand.

Though when the Herald posted news of the plan's submission for approval, readers certainly still had some questions, and strong opinions, on the campus.

Here's a snippet of what was said:

As was expected the controversial location for the site, at the former Shell Oil refinery on Ardrossan north shore, came under a lot of scrutiny.

David Steele commented: "No one wants a school built on a contaminated site."

While Michael Cairns went a bit more in depth, saying: "It's still contaminated and the people who did these jobs in the past had more care about safety.

"Told us to never build on this land. They had the land retested and its still contaminated. You'd think then they would look for another site, wouldn't you?"

While in response to these comments, Pauline Mcluckie added: "I also think 100s of children so near the sea is dangerous."

And the sea was also a concern of David Maxwell, who commented: "Surely with the supposed rising sea levels and global warming this is a bad idea for a location."

John McMillan raised other concerns about the location, referring less to the dangers of the land itself.

He said: "I personally think knocking down the old building and building on the same grounds would be better as it doesn’t destroy the view and the seaside - the amount of rubbish that will be thrown away and end up in the sea as well."

Other looked beyond the site itself, and to the cost of the campus - which is currently projected at just over £80m.

Stephen Kelly doubted this prediction, and said: "Going by that picture, it will about a hundred million, just for the sea defences the amount of rocks involved, compared to Saltcoats prom effort."

While Ian McDonald added: "Instead of spending millions on "out there" architects, how's about a plain building and a decent education. What's more important here?"

And though the plans came under a lot of scrutiny, a few positives were highlighted by our readers.

Alan Mcdowell focussed on just how needed the new campus is.

He said: "Have you been inside Ardrossan Academy recently? It's stuck in the 80s, the place is a dive. They need a new school."

While Margaret McKee liked the look of the campus, adding: "Looks great! Young people deserve a good environment!"

And though Stefan Donald had some concerns about the plans, he took a number of positives from the proposals.

He commented: "The main bits to near the tide would be ruined in five years - build a wall seperating the school from the sea and move it back slightly.

"Swap where the football fields are with the school and it would be a bit more sheltered! Looks decent though."
