A KILWINNING man is going to push his body to the limits to raise funds for a family friend.

Kevin Brown is planning to row a mammoth 42 miles - the equivalent of the Channel crossing and then back again - on Saturday, May 29, in a bid to send a local mother and gran on a much needed respite trip.

Kevin will be donated the funds raised to a friend of his mother's - Linda - who sadly lost both her legs following a serious fall.

Kevin explained: "I've been thinking about a woman recently who has been going through a really crap time.

"I wanted to do something for her and all I needed was the craziest idea to give me the green light to go for it.

"I became aware that a friend's mum had been going through a particularly difficult time in the last while, and I wanted to do something just to allow her to feel good even for a few days.

"Linda, a local mum and Gran from Kilwinning, who suffered a serious fall, ended up - due to her diabetes getting peripheral vascular disease - sadly losing both her legs.

"This has been a traumatic event for Linda and the whole family."

This provided Kevin with his motivation, as he looks to ensure Linda can enjoy some much needed time away.

He added: "I want to do something about that and raise some money to send Linda away with her partner Charlie for some respite somewhere that has good disabled access.

"So in typical Kev fashion, next Saturday, I'll attempt to row the equivalent of the Channel crossing and then back again, totally 42 miles.

"To add to the pleasure of those looking forward to my suffering - I've never rowed more than 10k (six miles), and I'm not anywhere near fit."

Kevin is due to complete the challenge at his brother, Scott Brown's, gym - SBF in Irvine.

He will first sit down on the rowing machine at 6am on Saturday, but has little idea of just how long his journey will last.

Kevin continued: "I've no idea how long it will take me or whether I'm certain I'll make it, but I'll give it a dam good go and try and raise a few quid in the process.

"I'll get some lives (on social media) going through the event and hopefully get some visitors down there throughout the day to spur me on."

Kevin has set a fundraising target for his row of £1,000 - and is currently over a third of the way towards this.
