Calling all climate-conscious citizens, local growers and green-fingered gardeners in need of a compost boost…

North Ayrshire Council’s Waste Services team is offering residents the chance to give gardens or allotments a boost with its free compost giveaway events. So don’t miss your chance to bag a shovel or two.

Around 70 tonnes of loose compost will be available at the big compost giveaway for residents to collect next week, from noon each day, at the following locations so get it before it goes:

Household Waste Recycling Centre, Market Road, Brodick – Wednesday, June 7.

Garrison House, Millport – Thursday, June 8.

Irvine Beach Park car park (near Harbour Pilot House), Irvine - Thursday, June 8.

Stevenson Shore, Carpark - Thursday, June 8.

Kilbirnie Library (behind library) car park - Thursday, June  8.

Vikingar carpark, Largs – Friday, June 9.

Eglinton Park, Kilwinning – Friday, June 9.

The compost comes from food and garden waste, which is collected within North Ayrshire each year. Last year alone, this was almost 12,300 tonnes.

Councillor Tony Gurney, cabinet member for economy and climate change, said: “As part of our climate change and sustainability strategy, our compost giveaways are a brilliant opportunity for community groups and individuals to reap the rewards of recycling. Better yet, they allow our residents to see first-hand just how beneficial recycling can be.

“I would encourage anyone in North Ayrshire who could make use of the compost to head along and get their share.

“Come along early to avoid missing out. The compost will be loose, so please bring a bag and shovel with you. Pop along from noon on the day.”

Compost supplies are limited and will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
