Representatives of the SAS Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, accompanied by members of the public, held a short but solemn service in Saltcoats today (Tuesday, June 6) to commemorate the 79th Anniversary of D Day.
On June 6, 1944, Operation Overlord was finally launched.
This was the largest amphibious operation in history and marked the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe and of the war in Europe some 11 hard months later.
By the end of the day the Allies had suffered nearly 10,000 casualties of which 4,000 were fatalities.
Lest We Forget.
