KIND-HEARTED youngsters in West Kilbride have done their bit to help a local fund-raising appeal for a boy battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Children at the West Kilbride Early Years Centre shrugged off some decidedly dreich summer weather to take part in a special sports day in aid of the ‘Rae of Sunshine’ appeal.
The fund-raiser was set up earlier this year by the parents of young Calum Rae, who was diagnosed earlier this year with a stage M high-risk neuroblastoma.
Calum lives in Troon with his mum Victoria McDonald, who is originally from Dalry and works as a teacher at West Kilbride Primary School, and dad Andrew Rae.
Victoria and Andrew are hoping to raise £250,000 to take Calum for treatment in New York – and the West Kilbride event gave the appeal a boost of more than £2,000.
A spokesperson for the centre said: "We would like to thank everyone who supported our fundraising efforts on sports day to help Calum Rae and his Rae of Sunshine fund.
“We are delighted to say that our children and families raised £2,050.50.”
With less than a month to go until the online appeal closes, almost £211,000 has been donated by more than 4,000 supporters, taking the appeal to 84 per cent of its target.
