A man who brandished an axe and threw a bottle at police in Kilwinning after breaking into a garden shed has been jailed.

Barry John McLeod stole power tools and an electric bike from a shed at a property in the town's St Winning's Road on June 4.

He was nabbed later that day after hurling a glass bottle at a cop during a stand-off at an address in nearby Eglinton Place, striking a shield which the officer was holding at the time.

McLeod, who was described in court papers as an inmate at Kilmarnock prison, admitted barricading himself into the premises, shouting and swearing and issuing threats while brandishing an axe.

He also shouted homophobic abuse and a racist remark at police.

McLeod appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court for sentencing last week, when he was represented by defence solicitor Simon Brown.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, to be served from July 25, with the punishment reduced from one of 18 months because of his guilty plea.
