BIZARRE roadworks scheduling could have led to the bottom end of Stevenston being 'cut off' from the rest of the world.

However, after the Herald contacted North Ayrshire Council to query the works, they are now to be revised.

Work had initially been scheduled to take place on the B752 'Ardeer Road' late last month, with the works due to have concluded by now.

This road offers a route towards the bottom end of Stevenston from the Ardeer Roundabout on Kilwinning Road to the top of the Ardeer industrial estate. The full road was to be closed while resurfacing works took place.

Once these works had concluded, work was to begin on the town's Station Road, from the level crossing to number 24, a full closure which was also due to take place for resurfacing.

This road provides another route to the bottom end of the town, via Station Road and Stevenston Cross.

However due to delays, the contracter completing these works on the council's behalf had to reschedule this work.

And after visiting the The Scottish Road Works Register - which shows notices of works to be undertaken - it was noticed that both these road closures had been scheduled to take place at the same time.

With both roadworks due to run for 15 days from August 7-15, it would have left those in streets south of Stevenston's Station Road and the level crossing completely cut off - with no alternative route out of the 'bottom end' throughout the closure period.

One local had particular concerns that a lack of access for emergency services in particular could pose a major issue.

Hundreds of homes, and a number of businesses in the Ardeer industrial estate, also would have been cut off.

After being made aware of the issue, the Herald quickly contacted North Ayrshire Council, who say the schedule will now be revised.

A spokesperson said: “The Scottish Road Works Register shows notices of intent to undertake works and are posted in advance to show the roadworks which are intended to be undertaken across Scotland.

“The timescales for each of the works can be adjusted depending on when works are able to be undertaken.

“In this particular instance, we would not intend to carry out simultaneous works on Shore Road and the B752 Ardeer Road, particularly as the other road would likely be used as the diversion route.

“We will confirm the schedule of works as soon as we receive a revised programme from our contractor.”
