A FUNDRAISER has been launched to support the family of a Kilbirnie man after a freak holiday accident.

Ross McDonald, 21, fell off a balcony whilst on a trip to Benidorm on September 23.

The fall has meant that the young man has had to spend an extended period of time in a Spanish hospital.

Ross fractured many bones in his back and feet as a result of the incident, and is currently unable to leave the European country.

He will be unable to fly home from Spain until he is fit to do so - and will require additional support when the time comes.

Unfortunately, despite having travel insurance, the fall has proved to be a costly one.

The 21-year-old's travel insurance included a clause which meant it did not cover balcony falls.

"The insurance company refuses to help," a friend of Ross' family said, "and the family have been abandoned by them from the start, with no offer of support."

While Ross has been unable to get home, his family have been travelling to and from Spain to support him.

That is why family friend Jean Todd set up a gofundme page to raise funds to support her friends through this incredibly worrying and stressful time.

On the fundraising page, she commented: "I am hoping to raise as much as possible to help ease the burden of the continually increasing costs and expenses so the family can concentrate on supporting Ross and getting him home safely.

"The family are thankful for all the well-wishes and support so far."

The support of the community has been immense so far, with a fundraising goal of £4,000 already met less than 24-hours after the plea was made on October 5.

More than £5,620 has been raised so far, with over 180 people donating to support Ross and his family.
