Finally in October 2008, North Ayrshire Council leader David O’Neill claimed the loss of £15 million from the £400m council budget wasn’t the end of the world.

North Ayrshire Council was one of the worst-hit local authorities in October 2008 after the Icelandic banks crisis.

However, Cllr O’Neill urged people not to panic amid rumours in the national press of council tax increases and staff cuts.

He said: “It would be wrong to say that there will be no impact. However, we have got to keep it in perspective.”
