More than £1500 has been donated to a charity buffet for Glasgow cleansing staff struggling to cope with the cost of living crisis.

GMB convenor Chris Mitchell decided to host several events over the last few weeks at each of the cleansing depots to thank staff for their hard work and dedication to the city over the past year.

He also thanked members of the SNP, Green and Labour parties for their donations which contributed towards covering the cost of the buffet which was well received by members of the GMB – particularly those who struggle to feed themselves and their families or pay their bills.

Mr Mitchell said: “Following the year we have had with the cost of living crisis, I went to the councillors and asked them to donate some money so we could host a buffet for our workers.

“I went to every party and the SNP, Greens and Labour said they would donate to say thank you to the workers for all their hard work this year.

“Altogether, I think around £1500 was donated to us which is very much appreciated.”

Chris has been using the money raised to pick up food and drink so he could host a buffet style meal for his members.

He continued: “During these tough times it is good to be able to offer our members a meal, because a lot of the people I represent struggle month to month with their wages, their rent, their council tax and bills in general.

“I felt like it was about time we did something for these people to say thank you.

“It has been well received by our members and we want to thank the three parties for their kind donations – it has been very much appreciated.

“I am glad that some of the councillors even came out to the depots to see for themselves how well it was received because it’s about working together for the benefit of the city.  “I hope this will be something we will be able to continue going forward.”
