The 50th anniversary of Ardrossan Castle being named a Scheduled Monument of National Importance will be celebrated later this year.

The castle officially became a scheduled monument on December 31, 1973.

And the Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society will be helding a series of events throughout 2024 to mark the big occasion.

The group's annual general meeting will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Ardrossan Indoor Bowling Club and it will be followed by a public forum to discuss and plan the events to mark the anniversary.

They are looking for input from across the community and everyone is welcome to join them.

There has been a castle on the site since the 12th century, though the structure there today - or what is left of it - rebuilt by the Clan Montgomery in the 15th century to replace an original structure destroyed by William Wallace, who captured it from English forces during the Wars of Scottish Independence.

The castle was partly demolished by Cromwell's soldiers in 1654, with some of the stones used to help build the Ayr Citadel.
